Vestments

The Mission's vestment collection of 39 fragile silk, brocade, cotton, and linen vestments from the eighteenth century were deteriorating due to improper care and storage. Eighteen of the vestments had been exhibited inside a non-climate controlled case with ventilation holes that allowed dirt and dust to infiltrate the case and textiles. The remaining vestments had been hung on wire and plastic hangers and stored in a damp closet for an extended period causing fabric tearing, shredding and separation. The Foundation together with the Carmel Mission Basilica Parish funded the preservation of these vestments. Textile conservation work included micro-hepa vacuum cleaning to remove dirt, fabric conditioning, and the purchase of a custom textile cabinet to properly store and protect the collection from further exposure and damage.
