Our Objectives

The Carmel Mission Foundation was established to restore and preserve the historic buildings, grounds, and artifacts throughout the Carmel Mission, founded in 1771. The Foundation also preserves the history of Carmel Mission through educational events, historical presentations, and artistic exhibits throughout the county. The Foundation is a 501(c)3 corporation, a public charity independent from any religious organizations. The Carmel Mission is a U.S. National Historic Landmark, a California State Landmark, and is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. Since 2008, the Foundation has provided over $14 million to support the restoration and preservation needs throughout the Carmel Mission property.

Over the past decade your contributions have led to the successful structural restoration of the renowned Basilica, the rejuvenation of the Quadrangle Courtyard (Central Courtyard), the restoration of nine mission bells in the two bell towers, various artifact conservations and museum preservations, the recent restoration of the century old Downie Museum adobe and Basilica Forecourt Garden, and the creation of the Serra Memorial Circle to commemorate your efforts. Your involvement with our events and community programs continue to support our goal of promoting the historical importance of the Carmel Mission and California Mission System.

And yet we still have a lot to do...

With 8 historic structures still in need of restoration, including four museums, California's first library, the historic Orchard House property, and countless art and artifacts dating back to 1568, we will continue to need your support!  The objective of the work being done is not just to remedy existing deficiencies, but to ensure the buildings, grounds, artifacts, and the history of Carmel Mission are preserved for future generations.
