Mission Bells

Completed 2009

The foundation restored nine bells from the Carmel Mission's South Bell Tower. This included 2 bells that date back to the mission era, the St. John of the Cross Bell from 1781 and the Ave Maria bell from 1807. The bells were remounted and equipped with automatic strikers. Two of the nine bells were cracked and were recast in Holland. One of the cracked bells, the Ave Maria Bell, was retired and placed in the Serra Memorial Circle in the Central Courtyard for all to see and touch. The community and parish celebrated the "Return of the Bells" together with a special celebration that included ringing the bells and more.
