Past Restoration

The Carmel Mission has 11 historical structures, multiple courtyards, and numerous gardens situated throughout the property, which includes the renowned Basilica, four museums, California's first library, and the historic Orchard House property. Since 2008, the Carmel Mission Foundation and has funded and completed over $14 million in restoration and preservation needs throughout the Carmel Mission.  The Foundation's first major capital restoration was the successful structural restoration of the renowned Carmel Mission Basilica completed 2013, ensuring its structural stability for generations. In 2015 the foundation completed the second major capital project; rejuvenating of the Central Courtyard (Quadrangle) which is now accessible and open for large gatherings and community events. During the global pandemic the Foundation began their third major restoration at Carmel Mission, restoring the century old Downie Museum, Basilica Forecourt and Visitor Entrance completed in 2021 in time to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of Carmel Mission.
