Youth Programs
The Carmel Mission Foundation offers several youth programs to engage, inspire, and educate our future leaders in Monterey County. Our programs are an opportunity for young historians to explore and understand the Mission's past and the important role it played in American history. We are building the next generation of stewards that will understand the importance of historic preservation, fall in love with our community's past, and fight for her in the future.
SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS
Foundation staff and CMF Youth Ambassadors lead a visual presentation on the history of Carmel Mission to 3rd and 4th grade classes in our community to enhance their studies of California Missions as part of their local and state history curriculum. These presentations focus on historical facts and elements, not just the first 50 years of mission life. They also convey the significance of Carmel Mission during the gold rush era, and through the formation of California, the 31st state, and as the Monterey Peninsula developed around it. These educational and engaging presentations highlight the community's and mission's history through historic sketches and 'then and now' images that bring together the 250-year story of this National Historic Landmark.

CMF YOUTH AMBASSADOR
Our CMF Youth Ambassador program is open to local high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. This program will teach these ambassadors skills in presentation development, public speaking, and the cultural history of our community's past, as it relates along a timeline of events at Carmel Mission and in American history. Students will have the ability to earn community service credits and develop their presentation by researching and utilizing historic images and sketches from the Foundation's archives and the Henry Meade resource center at Harrison Memorial Library. The CMF Ambassadors will lead presentations for local elementary schools and civic organizations interested in hearing more about the importance of the Carmel Mission as it relates to California, Monterey County, and Carmel history.
The Foundation is currently building this program to launch Spring Semester 2023 by forming a Board and Committee to oversee the program development, training schedule, and presentation timelines.

MISSION DESIGN CONTEST
Open to current 4th grade students in Monterey County with Carmel Mission as their assigned Mission Project. Students can enter their masterpiece in this annual contest for a chance to be featured in our Cornerstone publication and compete to win $500. All submissions will be reviewed and critiqued by a panel of judges made up of architects, historians, and archeologists on various categories.
While still in the development phase, we hope to unroll this program in 2023. The anticipated deadline for all images and submission forms is April 30, 2023.
