In August 2020 a major portion of adobe wall stretching from the front gate to the museum store was deemed unstable due to cracking and deterioration, creating a safety and security hazard. This 30 foot wall section was at the front entrance where all guests pass when entering Carmel Mission. With the continued support of our donors, the Foundation funded the emergency wall demolition, removal, design and construction of a temporary wall to secure the property until a permanent wall could be designed, funded, and reconstructed. To maximize savings, permits were approved to rebuild the permanent wall in Spring 2021 while construction crews would be onsite for the Downie Museum and Basilica Forecourt restoration project. A preservation grant from the Community Foundation of Monterey County was used to support the reconstruction of the permanent wall. The new wall ties into the buttress of the arch at the main front gate and matches the existing side. Alongside the museum store, a new pedestrian entry and gate was added which improves visitor traffic flow and accessibility, while keeping the property secure.
