MISSION BELLS
Completed 2009
In 2009, the Carmel Mission Foundation renovated nine bells from the Carmel Mission’s South Bell Tower. The bells were remounted and equipped with automatic strikers. Cracks were discovered on two of the bells, which were subsequently recast in Holland. The community celebrated the “Return of the Bells” with a special celebration that included ringing the bells and more. Each bell has a name, which include the St. John of the Cross bell cast in Mexico in 1781, the Ave Maria bell from 1807, the Guadalupe bell cast in 1804 at the Carmel Mission, and more.
